Dear Stephanie,
Your Bicentennial project sounds most interesting! Thank you for inviting me to share in it.

As I look back on my White House days, those five years of turmoil and achievement, of triumph and pain, I feel amazement that it happened to me, and gratitude that I had the opportunity to live them and strongest of all - out of all the trips that I made and all the people that I met - a deep, roaring faith in and love for this country.

As for my own most rewarding time as First Lady, there were moments, myriad and varied -- but I guess on balance the most rewarding was the feeling that I had come to know our country in all its diversity, its beauty and its problems. As for what was least appealing for me, it was trying to assign priorities -- so many obligations and pressures jostled each other for every hour of time and it was frustrating to have to turn my back or do only poorly many things I really cared about.

With best wishes to you and your Troop members,
Sincerely,
Lady Bird Johnson
